We’ve done our research and found the 4 best Newcastle pubs for you to visit this weekend. Now all you have to do is decide which one you’re going to hit up first.
Northern Star Hotel
With free live music on Friday and Saturday, it’s hard to look past the Northern Star Hotel this weekend. Located off Beaumont Street, this Irish pub is known for its cosy atmosphere, great bistro meals and ability to entertain. Featuring traditional Irish favourites, their food is so popular that it was featured in the 2014 Pub Food Guide. We suggest ordering the steak and Guinness pie with mashed potato and gravy, served with a pint of James Squire for only $20. If you and your mates have overindulged in a few too many lagers, there’s even accommodation available. The Northern Star Hotel really has it all.

Sydney Junction Hotel
Since changing hands last September, the Sydney Junction Hotel has been reinvigorated with excellent food and entertainment every weekend. If you’re a family man then you’ll love what the new owners have done to the place. Order the kids the $10 meal with a drink and ice-cream, then send them for some fun at the indoor playground while you enjoy a few drinks and some first-class food with friends. Haven’t got any little ones? Don’t worry, pick from twelve different tap beers, or a range of boutique and imported beers, and enjoy live music with mates in the sunny courtyard.

Bennett Hotel
If a pub has been a favourite watering-hole for Newcastle locals since 1865, it must be doing something right. Known as a more traditional, old-fashioned pub, step inside Bennett Hotel for a few beers in a relaxed atmosphere. Close to the Newcastle CBD, Newcastle trots and Energy Australia Stadium, you can make it your starting point for a night out, or stay and have dinner at the Oriental Kitchen followed by some beverages. Offering more than 13 different taps beers, you can sit outside and throw some back with your mates or sit by the bar and chat with the friendly staff. With pub-style accommodation also available, you really can’t look past the Bennett Hotel.
Where: 146 Denison St Hamilton NSW
Cricketers Arms Hotel
With happy hour 4pm-5pm Friday, live music from 8pm Saturday and $15 roast deals on Sundays, you could spend the whole weekend at the Cricketers Arms Hotel if you wanted to. If you like to watch live sport with a bit of atmosphere, then you’d be happy to know that the Cricketers Arms Hotel sports bar is always showing a range of mainstream sport on its bevy of widescreen plasmas. Prefer a more social atmosphere? The newly renovated bar area features a cosy fireplace and a la carte menu for you and your friends to share. Since it’s the long weekend, why not have a look at their extensive cocktail menu as well? With such a good reputation among Newcastle locals, you know you’re always in for a good night when you head to the Cricketers Arms Hotel.
