Top TikTok Cleaning Trends — Do they work?

With so many cleaning trends currently on TikTok, it’s hard to know if any actually work. We did the research and found out which ones are the real deal…

If you’ve dove the depths of TikTok, you’re sure to have seen plenty of TikTok cleaning trends. From organisation tricks to cleaning your carpet, there are videos for anything. But, do these trends really work?

Well, lucky for you, we’ve done the dive too and found the top TikTok cleaning trends and which ones have passed the test.

3 Top TikTok Cleaning Trends that Work

1. Mari Kondo folding trend.

Mari Kondo is famous for her, “does it spark joy,” motto and organisational tips and tricks. Hence, it’s no surprise she’s a trending TikTok hashtag with users showing off their Mari Kondo skills. I too have tried the folding and organisation hack and can say my clothing drawers are finally organised and more importantly, staying organised.

By folding and displaying clothes in a way that allows you to visually see everything, it disregards the need for pulling out half your shirts looking for that one you wanted but couldn’t see at the bottom. This is the same for all clothing items, with each having their own unique way of folding them. However, they are all displayed the same, laying flat but facing upwards, so when you open your drawer you can see every item in there.

2. Cupboard organisation.

Another appealing TikTok trend to watch is kitchen and cupboard organisation. By replacing branded containers with miscellaneous jars you’ve collected over time (I know I have), you can have a unique rustic look. Lastly, add labels to the jars to make your kitchen organised and easy to manage.

If you’re more into a minimalistic and clean look, you can order packs of the same glass containers from your local organisation store. With all of these, you can organise your pantry by shelf category and use a layout that makes sense for you to know where everything is, keeping your cupboard clean and organised.

3. Laundry stripping.

Laundry stripping is the process of soaking your laundry for long periods in a mixture of ingredients to deep-clean them. This cleaning process went viral this year and everyone has been trying it. Multiple users have shown their results, pulling their sheets out of dirt-coloured water after 4 hours.

Laundry stripping recipe.

  1. Mix washing detergent, washing soda and borax in a 2–1–1 ratio in a bathtub or large bucket of very hot water.
  2. Add your laundry after the mixture has dissolved in the water.
  3. Soak the laundry until the water has cooled (about 4–5 hours) while stirring occasionally.
  4. Once the time is up, put them back in the washing machine for a final (water-only) wash.

5 Cleaning Hacks for Carpet Spills

Spilling on your carpet can be a stressful experience. This is why a lot of TikTok users have posted DIY videos on how to remove different stains from your carpet.

After reading about these techniques for different stains, it was amazing (and oddly satisfying) to see TikTokers put these cleaning trends to the test and show how to remove these unfortunate stains. The following *recipes* for cleaning carpet spills are from TikTok user @omahacarpetcleaning.

1. Removing chocolate stains from carpet.

First, remove any excess chocolate from the carpet and discard. Next, mix ½ a teaspoon of dish soap with two cups of cold water. Put this solution into an empty mister bottle (use an old cleaning spray bottle or something similar). Spray the stained area with this mix and then pat with a dry towel. Keep spraying and patting until the stain is gone, then rinse with water, and dry.

2. Getting dried red wine out of carpet.

For this harsh stain, combine 1 tablespoon of white vinegar with a teaspoon of dish soap and 2 cups of warm water. Apply on the stain, then clean with a wet vacuum and rinse after.

How to remove coffee from carpet.

If you’re like me and can’t function before your first coffee, it’s no surprise you too may have spilled a few coffees on a rushed Monday morning. To fix this unfortunate mess, apply hydrogen peroxide to the stained carpet and blot with a dry towel. Repeat until the stain is out. Rinse afterwards, and you’re all done!

Removing lollies or candy from carpet.

If you’ve dropped sticky candy (or melted) on your carpet, make sure to follow this top TikTok cleaning trend. Combine 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and water. Put the mix in a bottle with a misting spray ability and mist the area. Dab the area with a dry towel until the candy comes out.

5. How to get glitter out of carpet.

Glitter can be a tricky item to get out of your carpet, especially when it’s longer or thick carpet. Firstly, remove the excess glitter with a vacuum cleaner (use the brush head). Next, wrap duct tape around your hand (sticky side facing out) and dab the area to put the glitter out. Repeat this process until the glitter is gone. Lastly, rinse the area and you’re all done!

While TikTok is known best for its dance videos, the cleaning hacks are probably more helpful. Although you can work up a sweat learning the newest dance, trying these cleaning hacks are the real life-changers.
