Sweet almond oil
Extracted from almonds with a pale yellow colour, sweet almond oil is the most popular type of oil used by massage professionals, but why? It’s less greasy as other types, is absorbed quickly, more affordable and doesn’t usually irritate the skin. Just be careful not to use it if you have nut allergies.
Apricot kernel oil
Apricot kernel oil is very similar to sweet almond oil, except it’s usually a little more expensive. It’s rich in vitamin E, which gives it a longer shelf life. It’s quickly absorbed into the skin which doesn’t leave you feeling greasy and when mixed with other essential oils, can be used as a base for aromatherapy massage. Generally safe to use for those with nut allergies.
Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil is extracted from the jojoba plant and is known for it’s antibacterial properties. If you’re prone to back acne or have other skin problems, this is the perfect oil for you. It’s got a great shelf life and absorbs very well. Usually fast absorption is a good thing, however the silky texture of jojoba oil absorbs so quickly it can be a pain to constantly reapply. It might be a good idea to mix this oil with something else on the list.
Fractionated coconut oil
It’s a common misconception that fractionated coconut oil is a thicker, white solid oil. In fact, specific properties have been removed from the whole oil, making it lighter and grease-free. This affordable oil gives off a great aroma and can last a long time. What makes this specific type of oil so special is the fact that it doesn’t stain. Most other massage oils can leave marks on sheets or the carpet.
Sunflower oil
Extracted from sunflower seeds, this popular oil has a number of anti-aging skin benefits. Light and non-greasy in texture, sunflower oil is rich in essential fatty acids, which are important if you want to keep your skin healthy. Remember to purchase in small quantities as it can expire rather quickly. This oil is not suitable for those with nut allergies.
