If you’re not properly prepared, the extremely hot conditions associated with an Aussie summer can wreak havoc on your garden. While some plants may thrive in the blistering heat, others will wither. It’s your job to ensure you’re using all the right garden maintenance techniques, to ensure your garden blossoms all summer long.

Watering In Summer

The hot summer heat is good for plant growth, but also has the potential to dry out your garden very quickly. Along with good irrigation, you should also try to water your garden at least once a day (unless Mother Nature does it for you). Water early to give your garden a chance to dry properly and avoid any mildew-related diseases.

Weed Control

Weed growth is most prominent during the summer period. When it comes to controlling weeds, it’s all about consistent maintenance. The more you weed your garden, the fewer weeds you’ll have to deal with each time. It’s important to eliminate weeds before they develop seedheads and start spreading like wildfire.

Mulch Protection

One of the best things you can do for your garden in summer is to apply and reapply a layer of top-quality mulch. Not only will mulch reduce the amount of weeds and give your garden a neat finish, but it will also stop the sun from drying out your soil.

Pest & Disease Control

During your summer garden maintenance routine, be sure to keep an eye out for any signs of weak or discoloured plants and turf, as this could be an indication its under attack. If you think you may have a pest or disease issue with your garden, contact your local gardening expert.

Mowing In Summer

When summer hits, it’s time to lift your mower blade a couple of notches. Keeping your grass long and lush will help your lawn grow deeper roots, prevent weed seeds from germinating and make it more drought tolerant.

Mowing tip—To will make this already strenuous task much, much easier, try to mow earlier in the morning to avoid the summer heat.
