Are you an avid movie nut? If you’re sick of watching blockbuster hits on your sub-standard screen, then it might be time to convert your old spare room into a new home theatre room. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as replacing your outdated TV with a big-screen TV. There are a number of things to consider if you want the perfect home theatre room for the whole family. We’ve provided a number of design tips, so you can have a gold-class movie experience in the comfort of your own home!

No exposed wires

u

Nothing ruins a home theatre more than a maze of tangled wires, running along the floor or across the wall. For both aesthetic and functional purposes, you want to make sure all the wires on your TV and sound systems are snaked through the walls and not visible—particularly important in wall-mounted systems. If you want to save yourself some trouble, try shopping around for wireless surround sound options.

Get comfy

d

If you’re not comfortable while you’re watching a movie, then what’s the point? Head to your local furniture store and find the right lounge options for you. While everybody is different, if you’re looking to replicate a cinematic experience, opt for a number of single-seat reclining chairs—this will give you a bit more versatility if you want to move your furniture around as well.

Room design is important

g

When it comes to designing your home theatre room, you need to take into account everything from the colours right through to ensuring there are no reflective surface materials. Darker colours on the walls and floor will minimise light reflection on your TV. Also, choose carpet—rather than hardwood or tile surfaces—because it absorbs sound and stops any echoing. Last but not least, if you have two or more rows of seating, remember to have a raised level so everybody can see!

Set the mood

o

Mood lighting is another great way to replicate a cinematic experience in the comfort of your own home. If you want to get a little inventive, try experimenting with LED lighting or backlighting which can add impact and minimise eye strain during longer movies.

Invest in tech

d

No home theatre is complete without a state-of-the-art big-screen TV! While technology is always getting superseded with the ‘next big thing’, you still don’t want to invest in an out-of-date home entertainment system. LCD TVs are your safest bet for the time being, just be sure not to skimp out on your surround-sound system!
