Choosing permanent carpet for your new home or renovation can be a real pain. What if you don’t like the colour in a year, or it gets a nasty stain from your kids spilling food? A great solution to this dilemma is to opt for a rug or mat instead. Not only does this give you all the comfort of carpet—those soft, warm floor coverings—but you can also change them out when they become outdated, and they can add a fantastic design element to any room. We’ve found some great tips for choosing the perfect rug for your home, as well as some Armidale renovation specialists to help you get rid of that old, smelly carpet!

Size

The size of the room and the furniture in it will generally determine what size rug you will need. For lounge and dining room areas, the safe rule is to always buy large—you want your furniture (such as couches, armchairs, dining table and chairs) to all fit on the rug. In the bedroom this isn’t as important, but again having a larger rug placed under your bed will give you more warm floorspace when you get out of bed in the morning!

Shape

While rectangular rugs are generally the most versatile in any room, it really depends on your home and individual style. If the room is an odd shape, or you’d like to add some interest, opt for a round or asymmetrical rug. No matter what shape you choose, still keep in mind the size of the rug relative to the rest of the room—it shouldn’t look too small, or be too large and takeover the whole space!

Fabric

The fabric you choose will really depend on where the rug is placed and how much foot traffic it will get. In a bedroom, a soft, plush rug is the perfect way to soften the decor. In the lounge room however, you will need a heavier fabric that is able to withstand foot traffic, and won’t slip around under your feet. Other functional rugs such as bath mats or welcome mats will be a different fabric again.

Design

Choosing the colour or design of your rug can be one of the trickiest parts of the process! Again, it all boils down to the purpose of the rug. If you want to utilise your new floor covering as a way to add some pop to your room, then pick your rug before you choose any other furnishings in the room. This way, the rest of the room design will centre around the mat. If you just need something to blend in, then choose a neutral colour like a cream or grey so it will go with everything else in your home.
