#1 The number 13

There are many origins behind the “unlucky” number 13:

  • In Christianity, Judas Iscariot (the disciple who betrayed Jesus) was the 13th to take his place at the table.
  • Apollo 13 was the only unsuccessful moon mission.
  • Traditionally, there used to be 13 steps leading up to the gallows.

The list goes on…

#2 It’s a legitimate phobia

Fear of Friday 13th is called “friggatriskaidekaphobia” and more than 60 million people are affected worldwide. Some will skip work, not drive cars or simply stay in bed on this day.

#3 Alfred Hitchcock was born on Friday 13th

That’s right, the original king of horror was born on Friday the 13th of August, 1899.

#4 Lucky for some…

Most notably, Hollywood. The Friday the 13th movie franchise (ironically consisting of only 12 films) made a total of $457,370,131 at the box office worldwide.

#5 2012 was a bad time for friggatriskaidekaphobians

Not only were there 3 Friday 13th’s in one year, they occurred in January, April and July—with exactly 13 weeks in between each. Good thing it wasn’t 2013!

#6 There’s at least 1 every year

The longest we can go without a Friday 13th is 14 months. Yes, 14 months. 14. Is anyone else’s OCD senses tingling?

#7 Famous Friday 13th tragedy

On Friday 13th of October, 1972, the Uruguayan rugby team’s plane crashed into the Andes mountain range. Out of the 45 people on board, 16 of them survived and were eventually rescued 2 months after the crash.

#8 It’s not just Friday the 13th

Although this is the unlucky date in most Western culture, Hispanic and Greek culture believe Tuesday the 13th to be the unlucky date. In Italy, Friday the 17th is the day of bad luck.

#9 Apparently the date affects technology too

On January 13th 1989, the “Friday the 13th virus” infected hundreds of IBM computers across Britain, wiping program files and causing a lot of worry in a time when computer viruses were a new threat.

#10 According to the British medical Journal…

There is a significant increase in traffic-related accidents on Friday the 13th.

#11 Buildings are superstitious too!

There are many hospitals that don’t have a Room 13. Some airports don’t have a Gate 13, and many high-rise buildings completely skip level 13.

#12 And another Friday 13th tragedy

500,000 people were killed in Bangladesh on Friday 13th of November, 1970 in one of the most catastrophic cyclones in natural history.

#13 And there’s more to come…

Fast forward to Friday 13th, 2029. Asteroid 99942 Apophis is forecasted to pass earth at a closer distance than any of our orbiting satellites. Okay.
