The Northern Rivers is jam-packed with insane beaches, all with their own unique characteristics. While there are too many to go into detail, we’ve saved you the trouble and found a couple of must-try surf breaks, along with some Northern Rivers accommodation for you to stay.
Surf Seven Mile Beach (Lennox Head)
There are a variety of breaks along this 8.5-kilometre long beach, some of which require 4WD access. We suggest surfing over near Coffeerock in the south, or enjoying the world-class right-handed breaks on the section of the beach outside Lennox Head. There are numerous rips and often big surf at this beach, so only jump in if you’re an experienced surfer.

Lennox Head Beachfront Apartments
If you’re a surfer staying in Lennox Head, then you really can’t look past the Lennox Head Beachfront Apartments. With the Pacific Ocean right at your front door and Lennox Village only a stone’s throw from your back door, these holiday apartments are in the perfect spot. Start your day with a surf at Seven Mile Beach, then come back to Lennox Head Beachfront Apartments for some recuperation by the pool. There are luxurious one and two-bedroom apartments available, suitable for solo travellers or groups of up to seven.

Surf Tallow Beach (Suffolk Park)
This 3.2-kilometre beach stretching from Suffolk Park all the way to Cape Byron is the perfect place to surf if you want to escape the busier Byron Bay beaches. Relatively untouched, you’ll find you may have the beach to yourself in some parts – especially in winter. Again this beach is unpatrolled and features a few rips, so we suggest only experienced surfers try their hand at this beach break.

The Park Hotel Motel
What better way to finish a day of surfing Tallow Beach than with a bit of pub grub and a few ice-cold beers at The Park Hotel Motel. This recently refurbished, pub-style accommodation is the perfect place to unwind after your surf while meeting a few locals along the way. With a pool, kids play area and barbecue facilities, as well as clean, comfortable and affordable rooms, The Park Hotel Motel is suitable for any groups looking to surf in this area.

Lighthouse Beach (Ballina)
If you’re a beginner we suggest the nearby Shelly Beach, however Lighthouse Beach has potential for some really nice, clean breaks and is suitable for surfers of all levels. With a couple of permanent rips along the 700-metre beach, ask locals exactly where they are if you want some help getting out the back. Also a great fishing spot if you were thinking about bringing the rod along.
