Are you fully licensed?
This should be the very first question for any contractor you’re vetting to hire—whether you’re trying to choose the right electrician, plumber or builder. You should only ever work with licensed tradespeople, otherwise the results can be disastrous. If you’re unsure, check their licence online.
Are you insured?
This is your home or renovation, so you want to be sure your contractors are covered for home indemnity insurance before you allow them onsite. This will cover you for financial loss if the builder becomes insolvent or simply does a runner.
Who will supervise construction?
You want to be clear about who you need to speak to for updates and reports throughout the build or renovation process. The construction supervisor keeps everyone in line, and will ensure high-quality workmanship is always performed.
Do you have a portfolio of finished builds/renovations?
This is a fairly obvious question, as you’ll want to see the type of work your potential builder is able to achieve. Having a look at their previous builds will allow you quick insight into their standards and whether they are the right fit for your project.
Building a new home is a massive investment, so it’s always important to do your research by thoroughly checking your prospective builder’s workmanship, previous projects and credentials.
