11 of the Best 2020 Halloween Costumes

1. TikTok Star/ e-girl.

To dress as a popular TikTok star, wear denim jeans, a crop top and Nike Air Force 1s (or similar chunky sneakers). For makeup, wear big eyelashes, overdrawn lips, glittery highlighter and brightly coloured acrylic nails.

You can also get a bit more creative by going as an e-girl. To dress as an e-girl, incorporate multiple chains around your neck, over-the-top makeup, black clothing (with bright pops of colour) and big platform shoes.

2. Y2K.

It’s no lie that a throwback to the 2000s sounds like a dream right now. 2020 is a great year to do a throwback to 20 years ago (yes, 2000 is 20 years ago… how time flies). Think bright hair clips, choker necklaces, a Nokia phone, pompoms, Tamagotchis, low-rise jeans (bonus points for bedazzled pockets) with graphic crop tops and sparkly lipgloss.

If you want a specific Y2K look, you can go as the iconic Hannah Montana, Lizzy McGuire, Paris Hilton or the Canadian Tuxedo Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. Or you can simply wear a tracksuit set with rhinestone details.

3.  Zoom meeting costume.

Since COVID-19, a lot of us have had to get used to working from home and communicating over Zoom. Once we got comfortable, we stayed comfortable. By that, I mean wearing only a corporate or business-appropriate top and keeping our bottoms the same as what we rolled out of bed wearing.

For this Zoom meeting costume, wear a corporate top with boxers, sweatpants or pyjama shorts and slippers or thongs.

4. Baby X AE A-12.

Everyone was shocked to hear Elon Musk and Grimes named their baby X Æ A-XII (supposedly pronounced “X Ash A-Twelve”) earlier this year. Although the state of California wouldn’t let them name their son “X Æ A-12,” as only letters can be used, Musk and Grimes found a way around this — Roman numerals.  Thus, their child was officially named X Æ A-XII.

For costume ideas, you could go as baby X Æ A-XII or Elon Musk/Grimes and carry around baby X Æ A-XII. Either way, make sure to have “X Æ A-XII” clearly labelled on you/ the toy baby. Additionally, the baby should be cyborg (or half Tesla) in some way to pull it off.

5. Tiger King.

It’s fair to say Tiger King is the most popular Netflix show of 2020. Even if you’ve never watched a single episode, you still would’ve heard of this iconic show. From the Tiger King himself (Joe Exotic) to Carole Baskins, this show offers many great costumes for 2020 Halloween.

For the king himself, get a beach-blonde mullet wig, a handle-bar moustache, his iconic blue, silver and black sparkly shirt and a stuffed animal tiger if you’re feeling up to it. For Carole Baskins, wear a pink floral blouse, flower headband, dark denim jeans and deep eyeshadow. You’ll be the coolest cat around!

6. Euphoria.

Euphoria is not only one of the most popular series of 2020, but it has taken TikTok makeup transformations to a new level. The iconic Zendaya looks beautiful in radiant makeup and lighting with reflective blue, purple and pink hues. To nail this look, use purple, pink and blue tones all over your face with lots of highlighter and silver glitter or stars for the perfect Euphoria look.

7. Dua Lipa.

Dua Lipa has already had multiple songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 list this year, including Don’t Start Now, Break My Heart and Physical. To go as Dua Lipa, wear one of her iconic outfits from her 2020 music videos, Break My Heart or Physical.

In Break My Heart, she wears her shoulder-length blonde hair down, evenly parted in the middle with one red hair clip on each side. Put on dark eyebrows with red lipstick for makeup and gold chains for necklaces. For the outfit, wear a cropped red button-up blouse and a red and white checkered skirt.

If you prefer Lipa’s Physical outfit, you can purchase the one-pieces on her site, wear your hair half-up and wear yellow leg warmers or socks (these are also on her website) with sneakers.

8. Ariana Grande.

To pull off an Ariana Grande costume, wear a high ponytail, winged eyeliner, bronzed contour and nude lips. Dress up by wearing an oversized hoodie or sparkling two-piece set with knee-high boots. This is such an easy look to pull off for last-minute costumes.

9. The Weeknd.

Firstly, apologies as this song is about to get stuck in your head! However, you can pass on the favour to your nearest and dearest by dressing up as The Weeknd in his After Hours album cover (containing his big hit, Blinding Lights). Wear a black button-up shirt and tie with a red blazer, oversized aviator sunglasses, black jeans and gloves, diamond earrings and white and black loafers to finish off the outfit.

10. Cats the movie.

The movie Cats was iconic…. for how terrible it was. Even the CGI was horrible, with multiple parts of the movie missing much needed CGI effects, and that’s not just me watching it! Check out this review of Cats from Rotten Tomatoes. For example, you can see unedited human hands in multiple scenes, with the visible end of the costume sleeve and the actor’s bare hands — wedding rings and all.

One plus of having such horrible costuming is how easy it makes creating your own costume! To dress up as a character from Cats, all you need to do is dress in a full cat costume, while ensuring you show your human hands.

11. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson — 90s era.

This is easily one of my favourite costumes. Additionally, I dress like this accidentally, a lot.

To pull off this iconic ‘fit, wear a black long-sleeve turtleneck with a chunky silver necklace, watch and bracelet. Pop on some mom jeans, a black belt and brown bum bag around your waist. This costume is always relevant and easy to pull off.
