If you’re located west of Hunter Stadium, why not to stop into The Mark Hotel for a good pub-style feed and a couple of pre-game beverages. While $10 at Hunter stadium might get you a pie and half a bottle of coke, at the Mark Hotel restaurant you can order a range of burgers, or battered fish to go with your beer. After your stomach has been filled by the glorious restaurant feed, head to the sports bar and warm up those vocal cords by watching the U20s curtain raiser – or whatever sports are on the other screens – while getting to know some of the other Newcastle Knights fan brigade who use this venue as a part of their pre home game ritual. Locals reckon The Mark Hotel is the best bar in the ‘burbs, bar none.

Their head chef Ally, and co, use only the latest cooking techniques and local produce to ensure your pub grub is the bee’s knees. If you’re the rugby type who’s into their wine then the restaurant also has an extensive wine list to match your steak or seafood selection. If you’re feeling a bit heavy after your feed and don’t feel like moving anywhere there’s a free shuttle provided to the game.

A lovely looking meal, A Fortunate Son – Newcastle

Calling all rugby league fans who enjoy an afternoon of fine dining. This luxurious restaurant is not for the whole cheer squad to come to practice their chants before the clash, it’s for those who like to enjoy a bit of calm before the storm. A Fortunate Son is an amalgamation of two visionary restauranteurs who have had previous successes in the industry. This little gem has a range of tasty dishes including a spread of smoked, cured, grilled and braised meats to go with their extensive wine list that is heavily influenced by French and Australian labels with a focus on low intervention and natural winemaking techniques. If it’s a chilly afternoon, get some warm scotch or gin (or finely blended coffee for those who aren’t into alcohol) into your belly instead. Whatever the case, make sure Fortunate Son is a part of your pre-game routine.
