Is drinking alcohol affecting your skin?

June 17, 2015 - 2 min read

Going on bender and not felling so great physically and mentally. Well alcohol can take a toll on your body and especially skin. So find out how you can reduce the effects of alcohol on your body.

Alcohol promotes aging

Anyone who has suffered a hangover before would know all about the affects of alcohol dehydrating your brain. But, a lesser known fact is that it also dehydrates your entire body (particularly your skin)! Alcohol forces your kidneys to work harder and leaves your organs (skin included) parched. Dry skin not only accelerates the aging process, but can sometimes even cause greyness of colour.

Suffer from skin issues

Alcohol increases blood flow and dilates the little blood cells closest to the skin, often causing broken capillaries and sometimes causing permanent redness. If you suffer from skin conditions like rosacea, these can worsen with alcohol consumption.

Facial bloating

Just like over consumption of alcohol can bloat your belly (also known as beer gut), it can also bloat your face! Because alcohol is dehydrating your body, your body tries to store all the fluids you ingest, causing your tissues to swell all over your body!

It even affects your hair

Just like dehydration causes you to bloat and age, it also affects your hair. Lack of moisture in your hair can cause it to become weak and predisposed to split ends. Also, over-consumption of alcohol has also been linked to hair loss.

Tips for reducing effects

I know it seems like the obvious answer, but the less you drink, the less likely you are to suffer from any of these negative skin impacts. If you’re looking for more solutions, the next best thing would be to drink more water. As most of these skin problems are caused due to dehydration, if you stay on top of your fluids throughout the night and before you go to bed, your skin is less likely to suffer. Also, you may want to consider eating before drinking, choosing what type of alcohol you drink very carefully and washing your face before hitting the sack.
