Sometimes, small things like how furniture is arranged can play a huge part on the overall look of a room. Chances are you’ve been arranging your furniture willy-nilly, without thinking about how functional or aesthetically pleasing the room will be afterwards. We’ve got the ultimate guide to arranging your furniture like a pro, and have even found some professionals who will be happy to help with any furniture removals.

Step 1: Determine the function of your room

The first step to the perfect furniture arrangement is to decide the purpose of the room. Perhaps it’s your living room, and it’s mainly used for entertaining guests and hosting board game parties. You want to make sure your furniture arrangement caters for the most primary function of every room.

Step 2: Determine the focus of your room

Similar to figuring out the purpose of the room, you need to decide on the visual focus of the room. Perhaps everyone needs to be able to see the television, the fireplace, or you want to be able to admire your favourite artwork. Keep this in mind when angling your chairs and other furniture—you want it to be facing the focal point.

Step 3: Place large items first

An obvious but key step is to place all of the large items of the room first. Start out with floor rugs, and then add large furniture pieces such as beds, tables and entertainment units. Once you’ve perfectly placed the large furniture to suit the function and focus of your room, everything else can fit in around that.

Step 4: Make space for clear pathways

Rooms should have a certain flow to make sure they’re functional. The ideal space for a walkway is 3-feet, so make sure to keep clear spaces where you want to direct traffic. When placing furniture, after determining and the function and focus, you need to take into consideration any natural walkways created by doors and entrances.

If in doubt…

Plan it out! There are plenty of free floor plan software options that can help you decide on the perfect arrangement before you put in the hard yards. Alternatively, you could play around with different arrangements on paper to get a feel for the room before you decide to move any furniture.
