Weather Warning

It is expected to continue with heavy rainfall over the weekend and next week in Byron Bay and surrounding areas including the Northern Rivers. Phil Holloway, Byron Shire Council director of Infrastructure urges tourists and locals to be cautious when visiting waterways such as beaches paying particular attention to signs if beaches are closed. With the severe weather this can also lead to many beaches closing with severe erosion with the amount of rain and individuals should take serious precautions. Staff from the Shire council will be monitoring beaches throughout the weather to make sure they are safe or placing additional signage to warn people.

Flooded Roads:

These roads should be used with caution as they are partially or fully flooded. With more expected rain over the weekend please make sure that you have planned in advanced your activities on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Upper Wilsons Creek Road [Caution]
    • Water over causeways, pavement damage may have occurred. DO NOT DRIVE ACROSS FLOODED CAUSEWAYS. Myocum Road – James Lane [Caution]
    • Water over Road – Proceed with Caution
  • Coopers Shoot Road – Bangalow [Caution]
    • Water over causeway. Conditions expected to get worse. DO NOT CROSS FLOODED CAUSEWAY.
  • Goonengerry Road [Caution]
    • Water over road at Beatties Creek. DO NOT DRIVE INTO FLOODWATER
  • Coolamon Scenic Drive/ Tunnel Road [Caution]
    • Water over road near Dudgeons Lane
  • Orana Road [Caution]
    • Water over Road near Balemo Drive Intersection
  • Left Bank Road [Closed]
    • Road Closed at 2nd causeway past Frasers Road. Staff have not been able to assess beyond this point. DO NOT ENTER
  • Goonengerry Road [Caution]
    • Water over road at Beatties Creek. DO NOT DRIVE INTO FLOODWATER
  • Huonbrook Road [Closed]
    • Road Closed at 1st Causeway. Staff unable to assess beyond this point. DO NOT ENTER FLOOD WATER.
  • Coolamon Scenic Drive/ Tunnel Road [Caution]

Tips for Wet Weather:

Make sure you have a plan of evacuation if needed, it is best to prepare just incase an increase in rainfall leads to flooding of your property or roads close by. For emergency flood help please contact call the NSW SES on 132 500.
