About Lash Lifts

What is a lash lift?

A lash lift works by lifting the lashes up from the base, adding height and curl to your natural lengths.

To lift the lashes, your technician will apply a silicon pad to your eyelid and use a gentle perming solution to hold the lashes in place on the pad. How long the solution is kept on depends on your lashes, however, will generally take 10 to 15 minutes.

If you have light-coloured lashes, your technician may recommend a lash tint to create a fuller look. In all, the process should take around 30 minutes and will last roughly 6 to 8 weeks. Most people say the lash lift process is non-invasive and have even been known to drift off.

How much does a lash lift cost?

The cost of lash lifts varies from salon to salon, however, expect to pay anywhere from $60 to $100 for a qualified eyelash technician.

Always visit a salon with qualified eyelash technicians with a good number of positive reviews. As lash lifts involve both chemical solutions and are close to your eyes, you want to be extra diligent in checking where you’re booking.

Some lash boutiques may offer packages so you can pre-order sets of lash extensions to keep up with maintenance and reduce costs.

How do you maintain a lash lift?

Your lash lift will last as long as your natural lash cycle (around 6 to 8 weeks), however there are some things you can do to prolong the luscious look.

Maintaining your lash lift may be easier than you expected. The 24 hours after your lash lift are extremely important. Avoid using makeup around your eyes, pressure on your lashes or getting them wet. Even steam should be avoided during this time.

Once you’re past the 48-hour mark, you can pretty much return to your normal routine. It’s best to switch to oil and chemical-free make-up remover and avoid using waterproof mascara. This will help ensure your lashes are in best condition and can last their full 6 to 8-week cycle.

About Eyelash Extensions

What are eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions are way to add noticeable length and volume temporarily by having individual ‘false’ lashes glued to each natural lash.

If you prefer a more dramatic style and volume, then eyelash extensions could be for you. Lash extensions are individual lashes—usually made from synthetic fibres—applied to each individual natural eyelash. This both enhances the fullness and volume of your lashes.

To do this, the lash technician will use an adhesive to apply the individual eyelash extension to each natural lash. You’ll need to keep your eyes closed for the 90 to 180 minutes, with your eyes and skin protected from the glue with a sticker or gel pad. Trust us, it’s a relaxing process.

One of the best parts about eyelash extensions is being able to go as dramatic as you want. You may even be able to choose a specific style, such as wispier look or cat-eye style.

How much do eyelash extensions cost?

There are so many different lengths and thicknesses of lash extensions, so prices vary—but expect to pay $120 + for a basic set.

While there are many different types of lash extensions, here are some average prices for the most popular styles:

Half set eyelash extensions.

As a half set only covers roughly half of your natural upper lashes, the price will be lower. Expect to pay anywhere from $90 upwards for a qualified eyelash technician.

Full set eyelash extensions.

With a full set of lash extensions, every single one of your natural lashes will have an applied extension. This requires roughly 70 or more lashes to be applied, so expect to pay around $120 upwards.

Volume 3D eyelash extensions.

As the name suggests, a volume 3D set of lashes gives you more volume and will start at around $150 for the pleasure.

Russian lashes

While not every technician will offer this style, Russian lashes are becoming a popular choice due to being lightweight and thinner. This means more lashes can be applied than a typical full set, creating a fuller look, but you’ll be paying at least $160.

How do you maintain eyelash extensions?

Eyelash extensions will fall out as your natural lashes do, so you’ll need what are called infills to keep them looking their best.

Like a lash lift, an eyelash extension will only last as long as the natural eyelash life cycle—about 6 to 8 weeks. However, many people will get infills done every 3 to 4 weeks to keep their lashes looking full.

Your technician will ask you to avoid using mascara, rubbing your eyes and using oil-based make-up removers, which can break down the adhesive. It’s also suggested to not shower or workout for at least 48 hours after application while the extensions are still adhering to your lashes. It’s also best to use a spoolie brush to give them a gentle comb each morning to avoid tangling.

What other options are there for getting fuller-looking lashes?

If you are looking for something more natural or budget friendly, why not try a lash tint? A dye will be applied to your upper and lower lashes and a beautician will let that sit for around 10 minutes. You can choose the classic black dye or even try a dark brown. This will leave you with tinted lashes for around one month.

Lash lift or extensions—which is for you?

Your choice will ultimately come down to personal preference and your budget. However, these are some things to consider:

  • Lash lifts are ideal if you already have quite a dense lash line with dark lashes. A tint may help with darkening your lashes, but not with volume.
  • Eyelash extensions are perfect for adding volume and length, but you shouldn’t use mascara and you have to be careful how you sleep.
  • A lash lift will look more natural as your natural lashes fall out.
  • As your natural lashes fall out, a dramatic eyelash extension look will look patchy, but infills will fix this.

Regardless of your choice, it is important to always go to a trained and experienced lash technician, especially when it comes to working with glue and objects around your eyes.
