7 Things to Do in Melbourne During COVID-19

1. Take free online courses.

Google courses.

Google offers paid and free online courses, ranging from 1 to 40+ hours, and even provides courses that would take months to complete — Salesforce Developer and Front-End Developer are 750 hours! With 136 options, some Google courses even include certifications upon completion, like Google’s Fundamentals of Digital Marketing Course. This course is highly recommended for marketing jobs, and I’ve had multiple businesses suggest having this certification is a great advantage for applicants.

University courses.

There are multiple ivy-league colleges offering free online courses in any area of study. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown and Columbia are just a few of the tertiary institutions offering these great opportunities, without emptying your pockets. It’s a great time to get ahead of the curve and pick up some new knowledge and skills,  especially if you’re looking to expand your career opportunities post COVID-19 in Melbourne.

2. Learn a new language.

Learning a new language is a great way to pass time and learn a new skill. Duolingo is an app that lets users pick from multiple languages to learn, from beginner to advanced. If you decide to unlock the paid version of Duolingo Plus, you can expand your knowledge and learn quicker.

Duolingo claims, “Spending 34 hours on Duolingo [is] equal to 1 university semester of language courses,” making this a perfect challenge to undertake in Melbourne during COVID-19. Even though you may not be able to travel in the foreseeable future, you may as well get prepared and learn the language of the places you wish to visit next.

3. Rearrange your room.

If you’re feeling a bit dull after spending weeks in the same setting, you can freshen your surroundings by rearranging your furniture. This gives the impression of being in a new area, while adhering to quarantine restrictions.

Even psychology experts claim your environment can lift your mood. When stuck inside for days on end, it’s exciting to clean and change your environment. Marie Kondo offers an 8-week tidy challenge and many other tips to get your room and life in-check.

4. Take on exercise challenges.

It’s no secret working out at home is a challenge of its own, but it doesn’t need to be as hard as you think. It’s great to watch YouTube videos so you can stay motivated by exercising “with” people, but it’s also great to set your own routine. You can find easy workout plans online which match your fitness level. Either way, as long as your mental and physical health are in a good place, then you have achieved a lot already.

5. Connect with friends.

Call a friend.

In times like these, it’s easy to feel isolated, with socialising in the traditional sense a thing of the past. A great way to maintain your social life during COVID-19 in Melbourne is to schedule an online meet-up once a day with friends or family. This can be done via video chat, online games or apps.

Turn off social media and turn on real connections.

While everyone is reaching to stay connected, it’s important to not get trapped in it all. Social media is a great way to stay up-to-date on what everyone is up to, but too many hours on here can leave you feeling a little dull. That’s why I often mute my socials and prioritise texting or calling my friends and family instead to keep my mental health in-check. Board Games are also a great way to pass time with family or roommates if you’re looking for things to do in Melbourne during COVID-19.

Play online games with friends.

Online games are one of my favourite time-occupiers, and hopefully will become one of your favourite things to do in Melbourne during COVID-19 too. It’s surprisingly energising to get social through video games and apps; my personal favourite multiplayer apps are Risk, Among Us and Clash Royale.

6. Take up a new hobby.

The Coronavirus lockdown in Melbourne is the perfect time to embrace your creative side. Use materials you may already have at home, like coloured pencils, paint, scissors, paper, etc. to create your own masterpiece. From drawing to knitting, there are so many easy DIY crafts you can do. If you have a sewing machine handy, you could also repair clothes or furniture while you have the time. On the other hand, If you’re not feeling crafty, you can opt-in for cooking, writing, reading or gardening, which also inspire creative thinking.

7. Start an online business.

If your hobby has gone well, why not start an online business to sell your newfound skill. With more people online during COVID-19, this means customers are also more accessible.

You can set up a website to begin selling your products or services you believe are profitable. Websites are easy to start and can generate great traffic and sales to your brand. Most digital marketing services work remotely as well, giving you access from any location. To give your site amplification, Localsearch offers digital marketing from $19 a week!
