We’ve all experienced that heart-stopping moment when our glass of red slips out of our hand or sloshes over the edge—only to land on the carpet or some other important piece of furniture. Wine stains are some of the most relentless, and often it seems easier just to put up with it than put your back out scrubbing it away. Luckily for you (and your back), we’ve found the best solutions for getting wine out of anything, so next time you have a little accident you can breathe easy knowing that stain won’t stick around for long.

Carpet

While one of the most susceptible areas for stains, carpet is also one of the easiest fabrics to remove stains from—even wine! The tip to getting wine out of the carpet is not to let it dry before you get to it. As soon as there’s been a spill, dab the wine with a paper cloth to remove any excess moisture. Next, there are two options to cleaning the excess wine:

1. Cover the stain with salt and let it dry overnight. Vacuum up in the morning and your wine should be gone.
2. Cover the stain with bicarb soda. Wait until the colour changes from bright red to grey, and then use a cloth soaked in vinegar to wipe up the powder. Leave to dry, vacuum and the stain should be gone!

Upholstery

If you have an upholstered couch or piece of furniture that’s had a little spill, the key is to act quickly. Because of the fibres and fabrics that make up a couch, it can be really easy for a stain to settle right in. As soon as the wine is spilt, pour a little bit of white wine onto the spill to neutralise the red stain, and then cover the area with salt. Leave for 15 minutes and then vacuum right up! Clean couch in no time!

Countertops

If you’ve invested in quality granite benchtops for your kitchen, you’re probably sitting pretty thinking they’re damage-proof. Think again! Stone benchtops (especially granite) are easily stained by food and drink with strong colours—wine included. The good news is, most benchtops are sealed, and if you wipe them down with warm soapy water immediately the stain shouldn’t stick. While a lot of cleaning products are too abrasive to use on stone benchtops, a gentle application of Gumption on a damp cloth will help to remove any nasty wine stains!

Leather

Because leather is particularly delicate, any stains need to be looked after with extra care. If you catch it early enough, you should be able to wipe the wine off, apply a little white wine to neutralise the colour and not have too many issues. If it’s a stain you’ve noticed the next day, or a few days after the spill, the bad news is you’re probably stuck with it—for a little while. Regularly moisturising the leather should help the stain to dissipate over time. If you’re really concerned, finding a moisturising leather stain will help to mask some of the discolouration.
