So you’re fed up with your roommates? Before you lose it, take a few deep breaths and read these tips for living with roomies.

Tip 1: Establish boundaries early

How many times have you come home from work, ready to enjoy that treat you bought for yourself on the weekend, only to find it’s been consumed by one of your roommates? Not only is this a violation of trust, it is also a major violation of your personal belongings. Establish boundaries when it comes to communal and non-communal food, and that if anything is taken without permission, it needs to be replaced, pronto.

Tip 2: You mess it up, you clean it up

When it comes to general mess around the house, if it’s yours, clean it up! If you clean as you go, you don’t have to worry about getting on your roomies’ nerves and causing fights later down the track. For communal spaces, start a roster so everyone does their fair share of cleaning such as mopping, cleaning up after shared meals, vacuuming and other chores.

Tip 3: Get on top of shared bills

Are those piles of receipts getting a bit out of hand? While dedicating this task to one person a month may seem a good idea, if they’re lazy or leave it for extended periods, it can be easy for this to snowball. Download a shared finances app, which lets everyone know exactly what he or she owes, and who they owe it to.

Tip 4: It’s the little things

Small house hacks, such as placing a magnet on the dishwasher to indicate whether it’s clean or dirty, can help make things a bit smoother for yourself and your flatmates. Organisation is key to a happy home.

Tip 5: Enjoy it!

Last but not least, don’t forget to bond with your housemates! Set time aside every once in a while to enjoy each other’s company. Whether you make it taco Tuesdays or stir-Fridays, make time for your roomies so you all have a good experience sharing a home.
