Although fridge-freezers are one of the most important appliances in our homes, they are also one of the least looked after. Regardless of whether you’re fed up of searching through the clutter to find a block of cheese, or have been putting off the generic spring clean for far too long, check out these 11 fascinating fridge-freezer hacks to keep your appliance squeaky clean forever more.

Where to Keep it

Dairy

Do you keep your milk in the door? Well, you’ll be interested to know that is the warmest part of the fridge, and therefore the worst location to keep dairy. To prolong its lifetime, try keeping your milk and dairy on the top shelf.

Meat & Seafood

To keep meat and seafood fresh, be sure to keep it in the coldest part of your fridge. This is most commonly the back of the bottom shelf—however, some modern refrigerators have a designated meat draw for this exact purpose.

Fruit

To prolong the life of fruits such as apples, pears and oranges, try keeping them in the low humidity drawer. However, if you intend to eat a particular fruit quickly—such as fresh berries—you may want to keep them on the top shelf.

Vegetables

The best place to keep vegetables is in the high humidity drawer. This is because produce such as carrots, broccoli, leeks and much more, benefit from a little extra moisture.

How to Clean it

Line Shelves

A great way to keep the shelves of your refrigerator clean and germ-free, is by investing in shelf liners and fridge mats. Simply place them on every shelf, and swap them out weekly for new ones.

Bring The Back To The Front

Too often we buy new produce, only to push it to the back of the refrigerator and never see it again. Instead of forever throwing away forgotten and now rotten produce, make sure you frequently cycle the produce from the back of your fridge to the front.

Baking Soda Magic

Fed up of those stinky smells in the refrigerator? Place an opened box of baking soda onto a shelf and the odours will instantly disappear. We recommend changing the baking soda every 3 months to ensure its effectiveness.

How to Organise it

Reuse Jam Jars

Did you know that salad stays fresher for longer in a jam jar? Instead of chucking away all your empty jars, reuse them as DIY salad holders for lunches throughout the week—goodbye lunchbox clutter!

Organise With Baskets

Baskets are a great way to keep your refrigerator clean, tidy and orderly. Simply organise your produce into different sections and place on the correct shelf (see above). You’ll never to ask where the cheese has disappeared to ever again!

Label…EVERYTHING

If there’s one golden rule to organisation, it’s labelling. Now, this rule doesn’t just apply to the refrigerator, but in fact everything within the kitchen. Be sure to correctly mark all produce before storing—this will make it easier than ever to find what you’re looking for.

Tape & Date

If you’re freezing produce such as meats and pre-cooked meals, it’s a great idea to tape and date them. This way you’ll be able to know exactly when you put them in, and by what date you should consume them.
