When you visit Mackay you will be forgiven for believing you’ve arrived in paradise. You wouldn’t be wrong when you are relaxing on it’s white sand beaches, snorkelling with turtles or kite surfing over clear blue waters.
Here are the top 10 locations you need to see when visiting Mackay.

1. Cape Hillsborough National Park

This location has it all. From pristine beaches, scenic rainforest, eucalyptus forests and volcanic rock formations to explore at your leisure. Plus you can pitch a tent and stay the night. Keep an eye out for kangaroos and the colourful array of birds.


2. Llewellyn Wreck

Make note of this reef dive location as you will not want to miss it! Perfect for beginner divers, this historic dive site is home to a coastal steamer that went missing in 1919, but was only discovered in 1997. Visitors have the option of snorkelling or diving to depths of 25 metres. Whichever option you pick, you will be sure to see an abundance of wildlife.


3. Sugar Mill Tours

Known as the sugar capital of Australia, the Farleigh Sugar Mill tour in Mackay will show you just where the sugar you use at home may come from. Tours are available during the crushing season between May – November and you will need to wear a long-sleeve shirt, long pants and enclosed shoes.


4. Mackay Harbour Beach Four-Wheel-Driving

If you are camping in Mackay and have brought along your 4WD, you are in for a treat. There are plenty of tracks around Mackay for all difficulty levels, however Mackay Harbour Beach is a great place for intermediate drivers to test their skills. If you are worried about being stuck in the sand, there are always plenty of people around willing to lend a hand.


5. Mackay Regional Botanical Gardens

Only open to the public since 2013, the Mackay Regional Botanical Gardens provides more than 3-kilometres of walking and cycling trails, 5 cultural-themed gardens, a cafe and a gallery with a view over the lagoon. The walks are suited to all physical levels and even your dog can come along for a stroll!


6. Adrenalin Sports

If you are looking for something a little more fast paced, Mackay has plenty of places to get lessons in stand-up paddle boarding, kite-surfing and many ways to enjoy the sand and sea.


7. Heritage Walk

Guided by volunteers or on your own, the Heritage Walk through Mackay’s township will allow you to catch a glimpse of pioneer life. Explore the beautifully preserved buildings and art to appreciate the history of Mackay.

8. Tropical Islands

You don’t need to leave the country to explore luscious tropical islands. Mackay is the home to many islands including in the Great Barrier Reef. Catch a plane for a scenic view to Brampton Island’s or even walk to Carlisle during low-tide. Save at least an entire day to visit one of the islands or even stay the night at one of the many resorts or campsites!


9. Mackay Highlands Great Walk

Whether you are looking for an easy stroll for the whole family or a 3-5 days trek across 56 kilometres, the Mackay Highlands Great Walk will take you through lush rainforest, farming communities and even give you a glimpse at mining life in an 1880s gold-mining township.

No trip to Mackay would be complete without seeking out the infamous platypus at the Eungella National Park. 80-kilometres out of Mackay will find you surrounded by lush rainforest, breathtaking lookouts and if you are lucky enough, swimming with a platypus!
