Building a home can be quite chaotic. Take the bedlam out of building your dream home with our tips for staying organised during a construction project. We’ve even found some trusted tradies for you to check out! Read on and find out how to help breeze through the building process.

Take Your Samples With You To Appointments

Swatches

When you’re building a house you’ll look at hundreds of paint colour swatches, carpet samples, fixture types—the list goes on. But how do you keep up with what you’re favourites are, or the options you choose? The answer is a sample pack!

Have a box either in your car or at home where you can put all the samples you collect. Each time you select your favourite samples, or the final one, put them in the box and take it with you whenever you’ll be looking at more fixtures. By taking it with you to consultations, you can mix and match as you go.

Record Everything In A Spreadsheet

Spreadh

Whether you choose a book or a digital spreadsheet, it doesn’t matter, as long as you’re using one. In this spreadsheet, make note of receipt numbers and dates, invoices, due dates for invoices, quotes, chosen fixtures, appliances, add-ons and every other decision, cost and information regarding your build.

Make different pages or book sections for every type of entry. Not only will this help you keep track of your budget and what’s been done, but also you can find everything at the drop of a hat!

Keep A Contact List

Book

You don’t want to be searching for your builder’s card to give him a call with a last minute decision. Invest in a contact book and list every single person involved in the build and have their business card in a slot in the back.

Log Every Discussion & Spoken Agreements

Tech

Talking on the phone is great for hashing out the finer details, quicker than you can by email. However, things tend to get forgotten.

Keep a notebook with you at all times and make note of the date, time, person spoken to and anything discussed including deadline dates, prices and inclusions. After the conversation, email everyone who was involved in the conversation a copy of what was discussed and agreed upon.

Not only will this help you keep track of what is happening, there will be no discrepancies about any agreed upon details.
