Everyone has their favourite homegrown techniques for catching fish. However, if you want to improve your chances of reeling in the winners, fishing scent is a must.
Often times, fishing scents are available as a gel-like substance that you smear onto your bait or lure. There are different scents for salt and freshwater fish, so it is important to do your research before you buy.

2. Squidgies

These soft plastic lures are perfect for catching the more aggressive, toothy and (of course) delicious varieties of fish. Squidgy lures are great for tough conditions, and can help you avoid the tedious work that comes with cutting and baiting your hook.
Due to their realistic appearance, texture and movement in the water, squidgies have a high success rate. They are a must for any serious fishing enthusiast.

3. Nipper Pump

Using a nipper pump is a great way to catch live bait when you are on the go. All you have to do is place the pump into the wet sand where the nippers are present (look for tell-tale holes), draw back the handle and then push out the nippers and excess sand into a bucket.
The nippers and yabbies that you catch with your pump make the perfect bait for whiting and bream.

4. Ball Sinkers

You may have the perfect bait and the most efficient hook, but these are useless if your line doesn’t reach the right depth. A ball sinker will improve your chances of catching bottom dwelling fish, such as flat head, as it will allow the bait to sink lower.
When it comes to sinkers, the general rule is that the less water current, the less weight you will need. Ball sinkers are great for allowing you to reach greater depths, and they will not get snagged on rocks like other sinkers. Be sure to pack a ball sinker and you won’t need to stress about the ‘one that got away’.

5. Fish Ruler

Nothing ruins a fishing trip faster than copping a fine because the fish you caught were over or under size. To avoid disappointment, be sure to pack a ruler and keep appraised of the fishing guidelines in your designated area.
The staff at your local Central Coast fishing tackle shop will be more than happy to provide you with all the size information you need, so you can enjoy your next fishing trip without worry.
