Dry shampoo tips to rock your world

Forgot to wash your hair? Dry shampoo is your saving grace but we have some tips on how to use it correctly.

Proper application

While most people adopt the ‘spray on at arms length’ technique, this is actually one of the worst ways to use dry shampoo. Similarly to normal shampoo, you only want to apply dry shampoo to the roots of your hair (where most of the grease will be). Part your hair, spray some on the roots, and then part another section of your hair and repeat until your scalp is covered. After you’ve applied the dry shampoo, give yourself a little head massage and leave to sit for a few minutes before brushing through.

Don’t leave it too late

The biggest mistake people make when applying dry shampoo, is using it just before leaving the house. If you know you aren’t going to be washing your hair in the morning, apply the dry shampoo before you go to bed. This will give the dry shampoo time to really soak into your roots, and will mean you don’t have to massage it in yourself. You’ll wake up with a fresh head of voluminous hair!

Make your own

If you’re not a fan of aerosol sprays, or you can’t make it down to the shops, simply DIY! Dry shampoo can easily be made at home, using either baby powder, corn flour or baking soda. If the smell is too strong, add a few drops of essential oil to mask the scent and voila! You have your very own, homemade dry shampoo!

Colour match

There’s nothing worse than applying dry shampoo only to look like you’re suffering from dandruff! Correct application of your dry shampoo should keep those white flaky bits at bay. However, if you’re still struggling with powdery looking hair, simply colour match your dry shampoo! There are plenty of aerosol dry shampoos that come in appropriate colours for all hair types, but if you’re making your own simply mix in a touch of unsweetened cocoa or cinnamon to blend in with your hair colour.

Not just for greasy hair

While the primary purpose of dry shampoo is to avoid greasy hair when you haven’t had time to wash, it’s a bit of a multi-tasker! If you find you struggle to add volume to your hair, dry shampoo could be your new best friend. Simply apply some before you head to bed or before styling, and you’ll find it gives you the va-va-voom you’re missing!
