Have you recently noticed a few cockroaches crawling around your house? If you’re fed up with these germ-spreading creepy crawlies calling your place home, it’s time to take action! Whether you’ve already got an infestation or you want to stop the problem before it gets out of hand, there’s a number of things you can try that will deter unwanted intruders. The main reason cockroaches invade your home is in search of food and water. Stopping the food source is the key to avoiding cockroaches and will help you sleep easier at night. We’ve got a few must-try tips if you want to keep your home pest free.
Guide to getting rid of cockroaches
#1 Take out the trash
Taking out the garbage on a regular basis will stop cockroaches from roaming through your trash. A full bin is a cockroach oasis, so try to empty it every night.
#2 Suck it up
Whether it’s under the dinner table or on the kitchen tiles, food scraps and crumbs can make their way to the floor very easily. Vacuum often if you don’t want cockroaches running around your floors.
#3 Clean your appliances
Crumbs in your toaster or dirty microwaves are like a gold mine for cockroaches.
#4 Dirty dishes
Cockroaches are very opportunistic creatures. Continue to leave your dirty dishes in the sink or in your dishwasher overnight and you’re asking for an infestation.
#5 Water
As well as food, cockroaches also need a constant water supply to live. Don’t leave any open or standing water around your home home—this will help deprive cockroaches of their water source.
#6 Fill the gaps
It’s impossible for cockroaches to invade if they can’t physically get inside! Seal every little crack and crevice in your home with a sealant and deny them entry.
Getting desperate?
#7 Tabasco sauce spray
Mix two tablespoons of tabasco sauce with 100ml of water into a spray bottle. Spray where the cockroaches are most prevalent and remember to wear a face mask to avoid your eyes watering.
#8 Mothballs
Similar to moths, cockroaches also hate mothballs. Strategically place mothballs around the house to try and deter these creepy crawlies. Don’t place near any food sources, and try to limit the amount used so your entire house doesn’t reek of moth-balls.
#9 Mint oil
Used in many types of insect sprays, when sprayed directly onto cockroaches they will suffocate and die. This is a safer alternative to other poisons if you have kids or pets in the house.
