We’ve all been there: opening that dreaded energy bill only to find somehow you owe way more than you thought. Luckily, with just a few little tweaks to your home, you can greatly slash those energy bills. If you’re ready to say goodbye to those nasty excessive bills every quarter, read on! We have found 6 easy ways to slash your energy usage, without very much effort at all.

1. Start off with this easy common sense stuff

There are a few measures you can take that are very easy to implement. Things like turning off the light once you’re finished in a room, unplugging things you rarely use and laying off the air conditioning for a while will all help keep money in your pocket.

2. Turn off electronics when you’re not using them

You’d be surprised how much energy you use when you leave electronics such as your computer, laptop, microwave, TV and other devices on overnight. While it may seem more convenient to have your computer boot up in 2 seconds, the numbers will quickly add up, and you’ll be paying for electricity you’re not using. So be sure to shut down the computer, PlayStation and anything else you leave running overnight.

3. Switch out your light bulbs

Not only will you be more eco-friendly at home, you’ll also be saving yourself a lot of money long-term if you switch to energy-saving globes. Typical incandescent bulbs generally use about 60 watts of power an hour and last for about 1000 hours before dying. In comparison, LED lights use just 12.5 watts of power an hour and last up to 25,000 hours—that’s a lot more money in your pocket for the long term!

4. Use a plug-in timer to keep electronics on only when you need them

It will require a bit of thought, but if you know roughly what time of day you use different rooms in the house, this trick will be very beneficial to your energy usage. By investing in a timer (generally less than $10), you can specify exactly what time you’re likely to be using an appliance, lamp or other electronic goods. These are also great for appliances you don’t want to unplug every day, like TVs and gaming consoles.

5. Get an expert in for an inspection

While there are options for measuring your power usage yourself, sometimes it’s easier and more accurate to bring in a professional. An inspection may uncover an appliance that’s on the fritz, or some hidden electrical issues, which could be costing you big bucks.
